Golf | Good vs Great

college golf Nov 27, 2020

What is the difference between the junior athletes that make it to college golf vs the ones that don't?

Through thousand of junior golf lessons, I've come to understand THREE KEYS a junior golfer must do to play college golf.

Deliberate Practice

If you observe your local driving range and watch junior golfers practice you should gain an understanding as to what they are working on. You can quickly tell who is the better player by who is striking the ball better. However, what you might notice is their attitude/demeanor towards practice. Some kids get extremely frustrated when practicing and others stay focused. They look like they are following a specific plan and are putting focused energy into changing/fixing a part of their swing or stroke. This is the point I'm trying to make. It should be clear what they are working on. He or she is following a specific plan. They aren't just beating balls over and over on the range.

Realistic Expectations

Having realistic expectations is important to keep a clear mind when practicing. Many players think they can fix or create a new move in their swing in just a few days. That's just not realistic. The golf swing is just a bunch of habits built over time. Habits take between 60-90 days to create. Check out the book outliers. This book talks about the famous 10,000-hour rule. Basically, it takes roughly 10,000 hours to become a professional in any profession. Let's assume it takes 10,000 reps to create a habit. If you divide  10,000 reps by 90 days you get 111/day. That is a manageable amount of reps to do per day. However, more than likely you won't practice seven days per week. Realistically you will practice five days per week. To complete 10,000 reps in 90 days you will need to complete 154 reps each day for five days per week. Manage your expectations and do your research.

Build Your Team

No one becomes great alone. NO ONE! Make sure you have people in your life that will keep you accountable to your goals. When you get lazy, get off track, or down on yourself you need someone to help you get back on track. Make sure to create an environment focused on success. If you have someone negative in your life you need to get away from that person. At least stop taking advice from them. Find players that are better than you. They can push you like no one else can.
